Use the Bible to Pray

3 Min Read

The Bible is living and active: God’s word to us. And it can help us to talk to God, too. Here are some great ways you can use the Bible to pray:

1. Read the prayers in the Bible

Did you know there are 650 prayers in the Bible? That means 650 different examples of how we can talk to God!

If you’re unsure where to start, then try searching ‘prayers from the Bible’ for inspiration. Here are a few examples to get you started:

A prayer for blessing – 1 Chronicles 4:10

A prayer for protection – Psalm 91

A prayer of worship – Psalm 8

A prayer of repentance – Psalm 139:23-34

2. Remember God’s promises

The Bible is also full of promises that God makes with people, which provide encouragement about God’s character, actions and love for us.

Get started: look up the promises of God online, or check out our PDF in the Prayer course Toolshed: How to Pray the Promises of God.

3. Read the Bible in One Year

There are lots of different ways to read through the Bible in a year. We love the Bible in One Year app, which features passages and a daily commentary from Nicky and Pippa Gumbel, leaders of HTB, London.

4. Pray the Psalms

The Psalms, often known as the prayer book of the Bible, contain content that can be used to pray every day.

Get started: Simply try reading a Psalm out loud and turning it into prayer, or try our PDF in the Prayer Course Toolshed: How to Pray the Psalms

5. Pray the Bible every day with Lectio 365

Our free app features a short morning and evening devotional, with Bible passages to help you focus on God and learn to listen to what God might say each day.
